In January 2019 we introduced a TRIAC dimmer interface: a module that sits after an installed constant voltage LED driver and makes it dimmable from a standard phase-cut (TRIAC) dimmer. We built it because we kept getting enquiries for TRIAC dimming, which is usually cheaper to install than DALI or 1-10 V, from clients with fixed-output drivers already in place.

How it works

Like our 1-10 V and DALI interfaces, the module goes between the constant voltage driver and the LED load. It takes the driver's 12 V or 24 V DC output on one side and the phase-cut mains signal from the dimmer on the other, and dims the LED output to match. The driver itself does not need a dimming input, so an existing on/off installation can be made dimmable without replacing the power supplies.

Other features:

  • A smooth dimming curve, which can be adjusted with on-board trimming resistors to suit the load.
  • Over-current, over-temperature and short circuit protection.
  • A power LED showing the current status.

Driving it from DALI

The interface works with phase-cut dimmers from any control system, Helvar included. In the demonstration we filmed at launch, a DALI signal was converted to a phase-cut output by a Helvar 452 universal dimmer, which then drove the TRIAC interface and the LED strip. No flicker was visible in that test.

The 452 is a single-channel DIN rail dimmer for leading or trailing edge loads up to 1000 W. Combined with the interface, it lets a DALI system control constant voltage strip on circuits where running a DALI pair to each driver is not practical. Helvar's data for it is on helvar.com.

When it makes sense

The interface suits projects where the client wants dimming on a tight budget, or where the wiring and dimmers for phase-cut control are already in place. For new projects with many circuits or scenes, DALI drivers and a proper control system are usually the better long-term choice; our control showcase shows what that looks like.
