In August 2016 our partner MechaTronix of Taiwan launched CoolBay, a range of passive high bay coolers for high power COB LEDs, with reflectors and accessories to match. At the time LED makers were pushing single COBs to very high outputs (Lumileds' COB 1216 and Citizen's CLU550 among them), and those sources needed a compact way to shed their heat.

A heat pipe inside a round cooler

From the outside a CoolBay looks like an ordinary round extruded heatsink. Inside it is built around MechaTronix's patented CoolTube, a quadruple closed-loop heat pipe structure that moves heat quickly away from the small hot spot under a COB and spreads it into the fins. At launch MechaTronix described it as the most compact design on the market for cooling up to 35,000 lumens.

Two power platforms

ModelDiameterRated output at launch
CoolBay Giga152 mmup to 22,000 lm
CoolBay Tera192 mmup to 35,000 lm

Both are now offered in A and B versions (Giga-A, Giga-B, Tera-A, Tera-B). MechaTronix's current page quotes COB or LOB engines up to 30,000 lumens, so check the datasheet for your specific engine and ambient temperature rather than relying on the headline figure.

Designed around round drivers

The fins around the core are sized so the cooler has the same diameter as the round high bay drivers that mount on top of it, such as Mean Well's HBG series, Inventronics' EUR series and Moons' MT and MU series. MechaTronix spacer brackets hold the driver clear of the cooler, which keeps free air moving through the fins and stops the driver from picking up the cooler's heat.

Optics and accessories

Starting from a single small light emitting surface makes optical control easier than with a large UFO style array. Reflectors or lenses can be chosen to suit a mounting height of up to 20 metres, or batwing optics for lower ceilings, and the tighter control helps keep glare down for people working underneath.

MechaTronix also positions the CoolBay for horticulture top lighting, paired with COBs that Lumileds, Cree and Citizen developed for growing applications.
