In June 2017 MechaTronix, our thermal management partner in Taiwan, launched CoolBeam: patented mounting kits that turn its CoolBlock 2x2MX LED coolers into complete high-output luminaires. Each kit holds between 3 and 12 cooled LED engines in one frame, aimed at industrial floodlights, high bays, high masts and area lighting.

Built around the 2x2MX platform

The building block is the CoolBlock SQ-01 2x2MX, a square cooler and LED engine. CoolBeam simply multiplies it: rather than designing a new heatsink for every output level, a manufacturer picks the number of engines and the matching bracket. At launch MechaTronix quoted kits for applications needing roughly 16,000 to 55,000 lumens.

Because the 2x2MX LED engines are already IP67 rated, MechaTronix could leave the CoolBeam frame as an open structure. Air moves freely between the coolers, which is what passive cooling depends on.

The four kits

MechaTronix lists four CoolBeam variants on its CoolBeam product page:

  • CoolBeam SQ3-01, a single row of three units.
  • CoolBeam SQ4-01, a single row of four units.
  • CoolBeam SQ Dual, a mount bracket joining two rows.
  • CoolBeam SQ Triple, a mount bracket joining three rows, for up to 12 units.

Mounting, aiming and drivers

  • Wall and suspended mounting options.
  • Tiltable through more than 90 degrees, so the beam can be aimed on site.
  • A driver bracket that takes common drivers, with Mean Well named at launch, without drilling extra holes.
  • The driver sits well away from the LED coolers, so it is not heated by them, which helps its service life.

Beyond floodlighting

MechaTronix now also promotes CoolBeam for horticulture top lighting. The bracket is 10.7 cm wide, so it casts little shade in a greenhouse. By the manufacturer's figures, each CoolBlock SQ-01 2x2MX can produce up to 150 µmol/s, so four units give about 600 µmol/s passively, in a fitting roughly 10 cm wide and 42 cm long.
